When I tap the security key on my phone, I receive a notification “NFC tag detected” nothing else happens?

This can happen if your phone treats the hardware key as a generic NFC tag instead of triggering the intended action (e.g., FIDO2 authentication).

Why does my phone show “NFC tag detected” but not link my security key?

How to Fix This Issue

  1. Don’t open the NFC tag notification. Instead:

    • Open the app or service where you’re trying to use the key (e.g., the Xapo Bank app).

    • Retry tapping your security key while the app is active.

  2. Ensure you’re using the correct app workflow:

    • In Xapo Bank, make sure you’ve navigated to Settings > Security > Security Keys > Add Security Key before tapping your key.

Setting Up Your Ledger as a Hardware Security Key

For Android/iOS (USB-C Cable or NFC)

Hold the key in place for a few seconds. Sometimes, NFC devices need a moment to register correctly:

  • If NFC-enabled: Ensure NFC is enabled on your phone, then unlock your Ledger using your PIN. Do not tap the key on your phone yet.

  • If cable-only: Connect your Ledger to your phone using a USB-C cable and unlock it with your PIN.

If none of the above resolves your issue, it may be because your device does not support FIDO2 authentication via NFC. Try using a USB-C cable to connect your device to your mobile phone and see if that resolves the problem. If you need additional help, please reach out to [email protected].
