What happens when my Xapo account has a negative balance?

Your balance should not drop below $0, according to our Terms and Conditions. Xapo only authorizes card transactions when your Xapo Card is active and your account has a sufficient balance.

What happens when my Xapo account has a negative balance?

Your balance should not drop below $0, according to our Terms and Conditions. Xapo only authorizes card transactions when your Xapo Card is active and your account has a sufficient balance. However, in some cases, transactions might be approved offline (when your balance is not checked), resulting in a negative balance if you are low on funds.

If your balance drops below $0, you will need to top it up, either by converting Bitcoin to US dollars or by adding funds. We will notify you as soon as this happens, and allow seven business days for you to take action.

If you do not top up the account within that time, we will use the following remedies to return your balance to $0:

  • Retrieve the negative balance from your Xapo Card cashback
  • Exchange your Bitcoin to cover the negative balance

If these methods do not work, we will suspend your account until you restore the balance yourself. If you fail to do so, we may close your account.
